Wednesday, 25 July 2012

Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Wednesday issues the funeral ceremony for soldiers who were killed in a helicopter crash in the east of Turkey, departure of Turkish athletes for London Olympic Games and Rohingya Muslims who escaped from the violence against them in Arakan region in the west of Myanmar. The Anadolu Agency does not verify these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.

Most of the Turkish dailies published the funeral ceremony in Ankara for one of the five soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in the eastern province of Hakkari's Yuksekova town. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel and a large number of people attended the funeral ceremony in the capital of Ankara. Daily HURRIYET mentioned Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel's comments on claims that the helicopter downed by PKK terrorists. The daily quoted Ozel as saying, "Such reports are absolutely a lie and wrong. This kind of news is fabricated by people who want to advertise the PKK terrorists."

Turkish dailies also covered the departure of Turkish athletes for London Olympic Games 2012. The dailies stated that Turkey would attend the olympics for the first time with the largest ever group of athletes. While Turkey sends 114 athletes to the Olympic Games, 67 athletes also participate at the Paralympic Games, an all time high in both events. Daily SABAH headlined "let's return with gold medals".

Lastly, Turkish dailies focused on their Wednesday edition the Rohingya Muslims who escaped from the violence against them in Arakan region in the west of Myanmar. The dailies displayed their poor living conditions in camps alongside Bangladesh border with Myanmar. The dailies stated that Rohingya Muslims were suffering from tough living conditions, they can't even get a meal in a day and many of them were fasting without food. Daily TURKIYE witnessed Rohingya Muslims' journey and described their journey as a dangerous one. The daily headlined "Baby at arms, fear in the eyes".
