Dhaka, Sep 2 (bdnews24.com) — Food and disaster management minister Abdur Razzak sought US help in preventing infiltration and repatriation of Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar.
The food minister said that the Rohingyas, a Muslim ethnic group of the Northern Arakan State of Western Myanmar, have been living in Cox's Bazar areas causing social problems.
"Infiltration of Rohingyas into Bangladesh increased when there was an initiative to register the refugees. So the registration process is being hampered. However, a lot of Rohingyas have been living outside the refugee shelters."
The food minister reportedly told these to US ambassador James F Moriarty when a four-member delegation, led by Moriarty, met him at his office on Thursday.
Razzak informed the US ambassador that the government desired diplomatic interference in solving the problem.
"The survey is going on. The government will take steps against the illegal refugees after the survey. We need your help in this regard."
The food minister said that the draft 'Country Investment Plan' (CIP) for food security is being finalised soon. It will help the development partners to invest in food security and ensure better use of their funds.
The delegation told the minister that the plan could be used as a document for development assistance. Bangladesh should finalise the plan as early as possible to get the loans in the second term under Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP).
The minister told the delegation that Bangladesh has received aid under the programme. "The government has given the highest priority to agriculture. So the government has taken steps to ensure the highest use its own resources for this purpose."
Moreover, he expressed his hope that the development partners and lending agencies should come forward to help Bangladesh combat global warming and fallouts of climate change.
